FAFSA 2025-2026: Everything You Need to Know About the New Changes

Filing for financial aid just got easier - and potentially more rewarding. The FAFSA has been completely overhauled for the 2025-2026 academic year, and these changes could mean more money for your education.

Major Changes to Know

Simplified Application

The FAFSA now has fewer than 40 questions, down from over 100. You can also send your application to up to 20 colleges, doubled from the previous limit of 10.

New Student Aid Index (SAI)

The Expected Family Contribution (EFC) has been replaced with the Student Aid Index. Unlike the old EFC which bottomed out at zero dollars, the SAI can go as low as negative 1,500 dollars - helping colleges identify students with the highest financial need.

Expanded Pell Grant Eligibility

More students now qualify for Pell Grants based on family size and income. You will know your Pell Grant amount earlier in the process - even before applying to colleges. The maximum Pell award for 2025-26 is 7,395 dollars.

What No Longer Counts Against You

  • Grandparent-owned 529 plan distributions no longer affect your aid eligibility
  • Family farms and small businesses are excluded from net worth calculations
  • Family fishing businesses are now excluded too
  • Easier Parent Verification

Parents can now enter financial information via a simple email invitation. If you create an account with your Social Security number, verification is immediate - no more waiting days.

    Smart FAFSA Strategies

File Early - This Is Critical

Many financial aid options are first-come, first-served. Filing early means more options are open to you. Students who delay may miss state and institutional aid.

    Prepare These Documents

  • Federal Student Aid (FSA) IDs for both student and parent
  • Social Security numbers
  • Federal income tax returns
  • W-2 forms
  • Records of untaxed income
  • Know Your Deadlines

The federal deadline is June 30, 2027, but most states and colleges have much earlier priority deadlines. Check with each school is financial aid office.

    Appeal If Circumstances Change

If your financial situation has changed, you should always appeal for more financial aid. Contact your school is financial aid office to explain your circumstances.
